A Night of Better Conversation: Sex

It’s hard to imagine a topic considered more taboo by great swathes of society than sex. Although we live in an era which might, arguably, be considered more “sex positive” than ever, it remains a subject we approach at peril. In fact, some would argue that living in a liberated age, in which we’re all supposed to be fantastically well-adjusted about sex, just makes things harder. So how can we best approach this taboo topic?

A Night of Better Conversation is a chance to engage with minds moulded by forces different to our own, and to go beyond our comfort zone by taking risks in what we are willing to share. Whatever your feelings are about sex and sexuality, join us for an evening of adventurous conversations, as we explore our our inhibitions, our desires and our hidden selves.

Our lives are so often filled with superficial talk, from office chitchat to commentaries on last night's television. How can we have conversations that inspire us to think in new ways, that stimulate our curiosity and that prompt us to say things we've never said before? A Night of Better Conversation has been designed to help us enjoy rich and memorable conversations about things that really matter in life, inspired by the ideas of great thinkers and philosophers.

The night will be broken into theory and practice. You will begin by learning a specific technique for better conversation and then invited to practice the technique with other people focusing on the theme of Sex & Sexuality.

'The body is not a thing, it is a situation: it is our grasp on the world and our sketch of our project.'

—Simone de Beauvoir

Sophi Bruce crafts learning experiences for a range of people and contexts that focus on thinking differently, developing leadership impact and adapting to change. Sophi has lived and worked extensively in the UK and now in Australia where she holds roles with the University of Technology Sydney and Social Leadership Australia.  She has previously worked within public and commercial sectors and holds a Honours degree in English Literature and a Masters in Communication.  Her formative years were spent growing up in a commune learning the basics of collaboration, perspective sharing and tolerance.

Sophi is inspired by the wisdom and progress that comes from purposeful and stimulating interactions.  She teaches ethics to primary school children, sings in a local community choir and is partial to travel and music festivals. She remains proud of her teenage-self coming first in a short story competition judged by Roald Dahl.

Special events are unique experiences designed to explore themes in greater depth, outside of the classroom. Often in collaboration with cultural partners, leading writers, economists, historians, philosophers, psychologists, artists and other thinkers, special events offer provocation, inspiration and consolation in the form of advice for living better. Session formats will vary depending on the subject.

TSOL is a safe, community space for the exploration of significant human concerns. Some of these concerns are of course of a deeply personal nature and if you feel negatively affected by any content or conversations then please approach our faculty member or host who can provide support and guidance.
